Understanding Your Sleep

Hypersomnia

What is Hypersomnia?

Hypersomnia is more than simply a preference for sleep. It is a condition in which individuals experience excessive sleep duration and still wake feeling unrefreshed. People with hypersomnia may sleep for ten hours or more each night and continue to feel the need for frequent naps throughout the day. This persistent drowsiness can interfere with daily activities, making it difficult to maintain attention, engage in conversations, or stay productive. It often feels like functioning in a constant state of mental fog, which can negatively impact memory, emotional stability, and overall cognitive performance. Over time, these effects may also influence physical health, mood, and quality of life.

While the symptoms of hypersomnia can be disruptive, the condition is manageable. With the implementation of a consistent routine, appropriate lifestyle adjustments, and, in some cases, guidance from a healthcare professional or sleep specialist, individuals can significantly improve their energy levels and regain a greater sense of control over their daily functioning.
